April 25th, 2014St. Louis Will Host 2016 Outgames

ST. LOUIS (KMOX): The Out Games are coming to St. Louis in 2016 - The games, created by the Gay and Lesbian International Sports Association, are held every four to five years.

Team St. Louis treasurer Todd Ackerman says athletes who have come out recently, like former Mizzou football player Michael Sam, confirm the mission of the games.

So, what exactly is the mission the Games wants to spread?

“That sports really dont know limitations in terms of sexual orientation,” Ackerman says. “You can be gay, and compete and do your best.”

He says that, with the help of the Convention and Visitors Commission, the group put in a winning bid that highlighted St. Louis’ strong points.

“The level of support, our central location, theaffordability of coming here,” he says. “The Games want to be family-friendly, and people have a lot of opportunities when they come here to do things for free, like in Forest Park.”

The competitions will include a full and half marathon, swimming, rugby, bowling and even darts.

Ackerman says a three-day human rights conference will also be held to discuss the welfare of the LGBTQ community. At least 5,000 are expected to attend.

The OutGames is being organized with assistance from the St. Louis Committee and Visitors Comission, PROMO, and the City and County of St. Louis.

Five thousand participants from across North America are expected to meet in St. Louis for the event. The OutGames will be held May 27 through June 4, 2016.

The North America OutGames are a continental event, created by Gay and Lesbian International Sports Association, held every two to four years. The event combines multi-sport competition, human rights and culture to support and advance the welfare of LGBT people in North America.
